What is “Original Sin”? What are the different views of “Original Sin”? Are people born with a corrupted nature or do they simply sin with no predisposition either way? Does the Bible teach that we are condemned for the sin of another? If so, how can this be fair and doesn’t it contradict other scriptures that say we are not condemned for the sins of our parents? During this session we will look at the narrative in Genesis that explains what happened when man first sinned. We will explore the nature of the condemnation upon Adam, Eve, and the serpent to help us understand how it effects all of mankind. We will also explore the Pelagius view of sin and the ensuing debate that occurred in the fourth-century. The student will have a better understanding of the difficulty that the doctrine of “Original Sin” poses and how it is contrary to the way most people naturally think, feel, and live. This session will build much tension that will not be resolved until the next.

Do humans carry dignity as God’s image bearers? Do humans alone carry the image of God? What about animals? Do they have the image of God? What effect did the fall have on the image of God? Did humanity lose this image after the Fall? How should the fact that man is created in the image of God affect the way we treat one another? This session will cover the vitally important issue of humanities’ post-fall relation to the image of God. The student should come to a better understanding of what it means that man was created in God’s image. It should be made clear that zealous believers often misrepresent Scripture and God by devaluing humanity to such a degree that the human race is not in any way God’s crowning achievement as described in the book of Genesis. This misrepresentation subconsciously affects the way we treat each other, leading people to justify contempt for all humanity. We will come to see that, unfortunately, many times the unredeemed displays the glory of God’s image better than the redeemed.

When was the soul created? Does God directly create each soul ex nihilo placing them in the human body or does He create the soul intermediately through the parents as He creates the physical part of man? If he creates the soul directly, when does He “insert” the soul? At conception? Birth? Or sometime in between? This session explores a subject that most Christians have never thought about in a significant and critical manner but has many implications on social issues such as abortion. In the end, the student should leave with a further understanding on how Gnosticism finds its way into Christianity affecting our most fundamental views about man.

What did God create when He created man? Is man a material being only? Does man have both a soul and spirit? If so, what is the difference in their constitutional make up? What are the implications for understanding the constitution of man? This session is a continuation of the constitution of man which began in session two. The primary focus here will be on the differences between a dichotomist’s understanding of man’s ontology and that of the trichotomist. The argument will be made that they both suffer from one major flaw—placing too much emphasis on ontological division. The student should leave this session understanding that man was created as a complete and whole being. It was sin that brought about a drastic and terrible change in which there is a division between the material and immaterial composites of man, but this change is only temporary and is completely unnatural. This change the Bible calls death.

This session covers the much disputed and seemingly inconsequential doctrine of the basic ontological structure of man along with the priorities, if any, of each part. The student will wrestle with the basic arguments of monists who believe that man is purely physical, not having an immaterial part.

What is biblical anthropology? What is sin? Why did God create the world? Was He lonely? Does He want worship and glory? If so, is God egotistical? This is an introductory session to the entire course. The main purpose is to convince the student of the importance of the doctrines of humanity and sin. Unfortunately, many, if not most, Christians have never dealt critically with these issues from a biblical/theological position. The main goal of this session is that the student will leave convinced that this study is a vital understanding that it affects our worldview at a foundational level. Here we will spend much time on the basic question, “Why did God create man?”, understanding that people have many assumed answers to this question, but these answers are usually built upon a misunderstanding of God’s nature.
